Lost Pet Trailing
Lost Pet Trailing with K‑9 Enrichment is a pet‑dog activity, designed to introduce you and your dog to the skills and thinking involved when a pet goes missing. It is not an operational search qualification or a professional search‑and‑rescue service. Instead, it gives you practical knowledge and your dog a safe, rewarding way to use their nose.
Every year, thousands of much‑loved pets go missing. In those crucial first few hours, understanding why pets disappear, how they behave when they’re lost, and how scent can help locate them can make all the difference. This page explains how our programme can help you feel more prepared if the worst happens.
How Our Lost Pet Trailing Method Works
Our Lost Pet Trailing Programme is built around real-world missing-pet scenarios. Over six weeks, you and your dog learn how to safely follow a scent trail, understand how lost pets behave, and make better decisions in those crucial early hours after a pet goes missing.
We start with the basics: why pets escape, how scent moves through different environments, and how weather and terrain affect a trail. From there, we introduce practical trailing exercises, teaching you how to handle the line, read your dog’s body language, and recognise when they’re “in scent” or need support.
Each week builds on the last, adding new environments and challenges at a pace that keeps your dog confident and engaged. The focus is always on safety, clear communication, and giving your dog a rewarding, scent-based job to do—while you gain skills that could one day help reunite a missing pet with their family.
Our Experience in Lost Pet Trailing
K‑9 Enrichment is built on a deep understanding of canine behaviour and scent work. We’ve spent years working with dogs in real‑world environments, helping them develop the confidence, focus and skills needed to follow scent trails and work calmly in new situations.
Our approach combines up‑to‑date scent science with practical, hands‑on training. We draw on experience from mantrailing, scent detection and enrichment work to create exercises that are safe, structured and rewarding for both you and your dog.
Above all, we understand how stressful it is when a pet goes missing. This programme is designed to give you clear, compassionate guidance and realistic skills—so you feel more prepared, and your dog gets to use their incredible nose in a purposeful, enriching way.
